Amid COVID-19, L.A. fetish fashion designers are thriving

You might call it the roaring ’20s for some Angelenos, but maybe not in the way you’re thinking. Not everyone spent the last year stuck inside, eating frozen pizzas or making maple syrup or baking bread or catching up on the latest shows on Netflix.

Although the pandemic may have hurt retail sectors, sales figures for niche goods, particularly sex toys and fetish fashion, helped tell another pandemic story.

Sales last year were strong, say L.A. designers of fetish fashion, a category that includes bodysuits, crotchless underwear, bralettes, ball gags and pants made from materials such as leather, latex, vinyl,

Why is NASA sending a woman to the moon?

NASA aims to land the first woman on the moon with its Artemis program. But why?

Monday (April 12) will mark the 60th anniversary of human spaceflight, or 60 years since the Soviet pilot and cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin became the first human being to go to space on April 12, 1961. Following this moment in history, NASA launched the first American into space and in just a few short years, landed the first humans on the moon.

Shopping was one of the few activities that was never fully suspended during the pandemic. But the days of perusing the wares of businesses and vendors on some city block or commercial corridor have been put on hold. (At least, they should be on hold, if we want to avoid another spike.) Sure, you could scroll through online retailers, but there are some elements of in-person browsing and buying that just can’t be recreated: the thrill of a great find, getting

Lisa Aiken, the fashion and buying director of Moda Operandi, is reminiscing about the party that followed the Jacquemus resort 2020 show—the highly Instagrammable one, set in the lavender fields of Provence during the golden hour. “So many of the attendees were in dresses that were sheer or had cutouts,” she recalls. Looking at the crowd, she says, “I was like, ‘Wow, you [all] look amazing.’ ” On that breezy summer day, she began to feel a sea change toward a new kind of effortlessly sexy dressing—“jersey [fabrics], skinny rib knits, silk slipdresses.”
